Field Trips

General Introduction:

Chile’s geographic diversity makes for an attractive program of field trips; those set up consider the interests of most IGU scientific commissions. To date, the following field trips have been scheduled:

CURRENT DYNAMICS OF NATURAL ENVIRONMENT AND LAND USE IN THE ANDEAN VALLEY OF THE MAIPO RIVER.

Andean hydrographic basin of the Maipo river (around the city of Santiago).

1 day

Present the geological-geomorphological features of the valley of the upper reaches of the Maipo river and the interaction between the local morpho-dynamic and secondary volcanic mechanisms and the human settlement and land use patterns.

EXPLORATION OF ACONCAGUA & MAIPO IN CENTRAL (MEDITERRANEAN-CLIMATE) CHILE.

- Coastal zone of the Valparaíso region (120 km from Santiago).

- Valleys of the Aconcagua and Maipo rivers.

2 days

Study the shoreline, periglacial and glacial morphologies of the coastal and Andean zones of the most densely populated region of Chile, also visiting towns oriented to agriculture (vineyards and fruit).

BIO-GEOGRAPHY AND BIO-DIVERSITY: “LA CAMPANA” BIOSPHERE RESERVE

- Concón – Reñaca coastal zone (130 km from Santiago).

- Coastal range of hills; locations in Limache, Olmué and La Campana (90 km from Santiago).

- Agricultural sector of La Calera – Ocoa (140 km from Santiago).

Look at aspects of central Chile’s geographic and bio- diversity, the current and potential threats, and management and conservation models.

VALDIVIA; WETLANDS AND THE 1960 EARTHQUAKE

City of Valdivia (840 km to the south of Santiago)

Study the ecosystems and wildlife set in the wetlands shaped by the earthquake of of May 1960, considered as the strongest on record.

EFFECTS OF THE FEBRUARY 2010 TSUNAMI ON THE COAST OF CHILE

Coastal locations at Iloca, Constitucion, Chanco, Pelluhue and Curanipe.

See the effects caused by the earthquake and subsequent tsunami of February 2010 on coastal towns and natural features.

DISCOVERING THE HISTORY AND HERITAGE OF CENTRAL SANTIAGO

City of Santiago

1 day

Assess the growth of Santiago visiting some traditional neighbourhoods (Yungay, Brazil, the city center) and the ‘Concha y Toro’ vineyard, to see the urban architectural and historic landmarks.

THE COPIAPÓ VALLEY IN THE ATACAMA DESERT: DIVERSITY OF NATURAL LANDSCAPES IN DEVELOPMENT, AND THE COMPLEXITIES OF HUMAN IMPACT.

- City of La Serena (500 km to the north of Santiago).

- Agricultural valley around the city of Copiapo and in the desert of Atacama (805 km to the north of Santiago).

4 days

Analyze the structure of the physical and human landscape of the Copiapo river valley, linked to the expansion of export-driven agriculture. Study of urban development at La Serena and Copiapo.

VALPARAISO: CITY AND HERITAGE.

City of Valparaiso (120 km to west of Santiago).

1 day

Find out more about the special character and features of Chile’s main port, considering the topography, physical and urban landscape, history, traditions and heritage.
